The studio was founded by Erin Babbin, Claire Molek, and Jon Sisti. Later it was mostly run by Erin, Claire and Nick Jirasek, of Guerrilla Smiles. it started as THE STUDIO, later became known as STUDIO 1020 and, upon entering the world of the internet was then referred to as THIS IS NOT THE STUDIO. It was located in a storefront apartment at 1020 N. Marshfield in Chicago IL. Erin and I curated the exhibitions, Nick made foodart and the space acted as a kind of clubhouse or salon. We had a lot of dinners and made art together and the doors were always open to the community.

"What is art? The more we search for the answer, the more we find it changes in waves like the weather, we watch as its center continually evolves. We must not decontextualize the work but see all elements as part of entirety.  Today we see The Studio at the service of understanding, as a space wholly dedicated to the greater possibilities of cognitive achievement. It seeds a dialogue which shapes and enriches - it is this dialogue which stands as center and rock and catalyst for truth, beauty and culture. The studio provides the energy that breaks down any intimidation associated with art and instead offers a space to see, eat, live, and be art."
